Research: Pop Music Conventions

I'm going to be filming a music video to the song TiK ToK by Kesha. Kesha's music falls into the genre of pop.

  • The typical audience for the genre of pop music is people ranging from ages 16-21.
  • Celebrities and other individuals that participate in pop music videos are usually dressed in very fashionable, and stylish outfits. The artists are portrayed as enjoying life and being very happy.
  • Pop music lyrics are usually based on love and relationships. The music is very upbeat and about living a fun life.
  • A lot of pop songs are about teens and their life experiences.
  • Pop music usually goes along with what is trending. Like "pop" music is the "popular" genre. If one pop song goes viral and becomes more popular, ten others pop up trying to gain the same success.
  • To create a catchy song, pop genre artists follow one basic structure. Verse, chorus, verse. This is what makes a pop song so catchy.
  • Pop music usually has a dancing orientation to it. Teens and partying are the two things that are perfect to include in a pop song.
  • Clothing in pop music videos is now more revealing than maybe ten years ago. Specifically for this music video project, I will not wear revealing clothes because I want to stay within the dress code for school.
  • Makeup also plays a huge role in a pop music video. Makeup is usually very abnormal and extreme compared to how it was ten years ago.
  • Technology has really enhanced how pop music videos are too. The types of angles are really cool because of the camera angles and movements that are used. Editing is also a huge game-changer.
